However, alcohol does seem to have a particular association with fat in the midsection.

In general, alcohol consumption is linked with bigger waists, because when you consume alcohol, the liver burns the alcohol first instead of fat. Beer also gets blamed because alcohol calories are so easy to overdo. A regular beer usually has around 150 calories – and if you drink a few in one sitting, you can end up with serious calorie overload. And don’t forget calories from the foods you wash down with those beers. Alcohol can increase your appetite.

When you consume more calories than you actually burn for the day, the extra calories are usually stored as fat. The location where your body stores that fat is determined in part by your age, sex, and hormones. In young age boys and girls start with the same fat storing patterns, but when puberty comes that changes. Women have more subcutaneous fat than men, so those extra fat calories tend to be deposited in their arms, thighs, and buttocks, as well as their bellies. Because men have less subcutaneous fat, they store more in their bellies.

The best way to lose beer belly is to lose weight. Aerobic exercises like running, swimming, cycling, and tennis are highly recommended to reduce body fat. But all types of exercises will help you keep the weight off more effectively than diet alone. When you start to lose weight it usually starts at your waist which is good news!
